Y4 on Geography Day

4HW focused on Williams journey in Alaska for Geography day. We looked at the route he takes to school and the beautiful landmarks he comes across.

The children in 4H, spent their morning learning about Lexi’s life in Nuuk, Greenland. We learnt about why different places on earth experience time differently and what this means for what another child’s day like. We researching the human and physical features of this city and created our own cartoon strips about Lexi’s day.

Geography in 5MO

For Geography, the whole school looked at the text ‘At the same moment around the world’ by Clotilde Perrin. 5MO were given Sydney, Australia as their focus area. We investigated time zones and worked out what time it would be in Sydney when it is 8:00am, 12:00pm, 3:30pm, 7:00pm and 12:00am in Birmingham, UK (GMT). We looked at a map of Sydney, explored Sydney landmarks and discussed/watched comparison videos of a child’s day in the UK and Australia. Finally, the children completed a comparison comic strip for the same moment in time for Sydney and Birmingham!

Nursery News

As part of our mini Geography project this week we have been discovering a little more about the country of Mexico and a little boy called Pablo who is Mexican. The story book, ‘At The Same Moment Around the World’ was our inspiration. We learnt although there are some things that are different in Mexico (such as the weather!!), there are many things that are the same for the children of Mexico and the children in Nursery. For instance, at times of celebrations they have fiestas and play the pinata game. We made our own pinatas but sadly they were not filled with sweets (we think Miss Killelay must have eaten them first!!)

We have also been learning to play the traditional game of Hopscotch. We looked at photos from the past of children playing hopscotch including children around the world. It was great to develop physical skills such as aiming and throwing and hopping and jumping. Our Hopscotch ‘boards’ were drawn out in the playground with chalk and we included numbers, shapes and letters to match the ones we have been learning in Phonics. We also created an indoor Hopscotch game by using masking tape 😉

We wish you all the happiest of holiday times and look forward to seeing you for the Summer Term back on April 8th.

Year 3 Enterprise Project

As part of our Year 3 “Social Enterprise” project, we made a hamper full of sweet treat donations from our families. It was given to St Mary’s Hospice for residents, families and staff to enjoy. The children wrote notes on little tags to hopefully put a smile on everyone’s faces!

Y5 – printing

Earlier this week, Year 5 completed their printing Art Focus Day. We looked at the artists: Rachel Duckhouse and Andy Warhol and appraised their work. We then learnt two new printing techniques: collagraph string printing and tin foil printing. We used the skills we learnt to design a print an insignia (Coat of Arms) which linked to our Monarchs history topic. Take a look at some of our work!

Year 2 – 3D art

We have studying the work of artist Andrea Butler and we have made our own bird sculptures. We designed them first and then practiced tearing, layering and feathering paper. We are so proud of our finished birds.

Y3 Science Week

For Science Week, Year 3 learned about the various theories which possibly explain the extinction of dinosaurs. We did some research then discussed which theories we felt were most likely to have been correct. The children then made their own posters explaining their theory of the extinction of dinosaurs. We also looked at how long ago dinosaurs were around. Did you know that dinosaurs roamed the globe for about 165 million years, compared to humans having only been around for about 300,000 years?

Local Park Visit!

Today Reception visited our local park again with two missions in mind:
1. Pick up some litter to show we care for our environment.
2. Spot any signs of Spring.
We succeeded in both – we collected up lots of litter and spotted some wonderful daffodils, buds and crocuses.  We had a “moment of silence” and heard some lovely birds chirping whilst watching a crow build a nest.
We had a lovely walk and hope to go again in Summer to see how the seasons change the world around us.
