Frank Chapman

Year 5 had such a great time last week at Frank Chapman. There were various activities such as: High ropes, blind line, Archery, Woodland Orienteering and so much more. We can’t stop talking about how amazing the residential was and how tired we are from it too! There will be a Padlet full of pictures for Year 5 parents, so keep an eye out!

Year 6 – Microbit

Year 6 have loved using the new Micro:bits in Computing this week. They used their coding skills, that they have developed on Scratch, to make the Micro:Bits play music, send a message and respond to commands. We will be using these to eventually make a Step Counter! #computing #coding #microbits

Our Opal Playground Launch

Wow – what a fantastic launch we had for our new, improved playground offer at lunch times on Monday. The children all had an absolutely fantastic time in all of the new play zones. We have ball games, creative area, sand and water play, gardening, small world, some cosy huts for reading, large loose parts building, and a costume/stage area. This is just the start – we have further plans for the rest of the term and into next academic year to make things even better! Here are some photos and pupil snapshots showing the positive impact it is having already.

‘I like the doll’s house because you can do so many things with it and use your mind to create stories and renovate the doll’s house and furniture.’

‘I love how we get to use our imagination to create things like cars and dens with the large loose parts.’

‘I loved how everybody had something to do!’

‘I like the place where you can draw with water. I enjoyed all of the activities.’

”My favourite zone is gardening because it is peaceful and you are able to experience the exciting feeling of creating life.’

‘I liked dressing up because it was funny watching people acting.’

‘I really liked the sand pit also the skipping ropes, hula hoops also the small world. I basically love everything it has proven a huge impact to the playground.’

‘My favourite bit of the playground was the den – it was absolutely amazing.’

‘Building your own car was fun. I like that trial and error while building and you have your creativity opened up!’

Library visit in Y5

Last Thursday, Y5 had a wonderful time at Stirchley library. We enjoyed some lovely reading from the Librarian. We also were able to go a read some amazing books from our favourite authors like David Walliams, Jacqueline Wilson and Onjali q. Rauf.
Some of us might sign up to get our own Library card too!

Nursery News

Nursery have joined the CID club! C for curiosity – when we are curious we want to, I –investigate to find out more, which leads to D – discovery and discovery leads to learning

We are continuing our journey to becoming sunflower experts and already on the Nursery Padlet, children are posting how their sunflower seeds are beginning to germinate at home – exciting times!
In the CID Club this week we have been using our noticing skills and looking really closely at a range of different seeds. We have been learning to use digital microscopes to look even closer and see things that we cannot see with the naked eye. It has been fascinating to see the young scientists at work and to see their reactions to the images that the digital microscopes can produce. Keep tuned for future news from the CID Club and all our young scientists.

Elsewhere, Hazel has been to visit and in Drawing Club, some of our young artists have drawn portraits of her. We must say that Hazel made an excellent model and sat very still and quiet whilst the artists worked. She was well rewarded after with lots of treats!

Coleslaw in Y1

Year 1 have been making coleslaw today! We carefully used our skills of peeling, slicing, grating and chopping with the fresh vegetables we had chosen for our healthy salad. We swapped ¾ of the amount of mayo with plain yoghurt and a dollop of Dijon mustard to reduce the fat content and give the salad a zing!

‘This Is Our World’

Phase 1 celebrated One World Day this week and listened to a story from ‘This Is Our World’ by Asa Gilland and Tracey Turner. We looked at two contrasting places and the lives of the children who live in Norway and the Sahara Desert. We all joined in with a song ‘We’ve Got the Whole World in Our Hands’ and discussed how we must look after it and each other.
